reBlog from pmorganbrown.com: P Morgan Brown

I found this fascinating quote today:
Whenever I start talking to people about social media invarably the question arises “Where do I find the time?” It’s easy to understand where they’re coming from. After sitting through several hours of eye-opening presentations about a brand new world of communication and engagement people sit back and think “but I already can’t get everything I need to do done,” and so they come asking “Where do I find the time?” A fair question to be sure. Trying to Tweet, Facebook, LinkedIn and YouTube all while trying to do whatever job you’re supposed to be doing seems fairly impossible at the onset. It’s almost enough to give up and go back to what you’re used to and comfortable doing. Which is exactly the wrong impluse.pmorganbrown.com, P Morgan Brown, Jul 2009

When is "Free" Going To Be Real Free?

Out of the bloodbath will come a new role for professional journalists. There may be more of them, not fewer, as the ability to participate in journalism extends beyond the credentialed halls of traditional media. But they may be paid far less, and for many it won’t be a full time job at all. Journalism as a profession will share the stage with journalism as an avocation. Meanwhile, others may use their skills to teach and organize amateurs to do a better job covering their own communities, becoming more editor/coach than writer. If so, leveraging the Free—paying people to get other people to write for non-monetary rewards—may not be the enemy of professional journalists. Instead, it may be their salvation."
James Moroney, pemilik Morning News, tidak setuju dan mengatakan, “I get thirty per cent, they get seventy per cent. On top of that, they have said we get the right to republish your intellectual property to any portable device.”
Jadi, Gladwell bilang, "But information can’t actually want anything, can it? Amazon wants the information in the Dallas paper to be free, because that way Amazon makes more money. Why are the self-interested motives of powerful companies being elevated to a philosophical principle?"
Seth Godin, penulis buku Free Prize Inside dan All Marketers Are Liars, tanpa basa-basi langsung menulis di blognya - Malcolm keliru. Mengutip Godin, "We're always going to need writers, but the business model of their platform is going to change....The reason that we needed paid contributors before was that there was only economic room for a few magazines, a few TV channels, a few pottery stores, a few of everything. In world where there is room for anyone to present their work, anyone will present their work. Editors become ever more powerful and valued, while the need for attention grows so acute that free may even be considered expensive."
Kata Wilson, "Once you have built that audience, you can deliver upsells via freemium models, you can monetize it via advertising and you can branch out into other services which are easier to monetize."
Bukankah seperti kata Stewart Brand: "I believe that all generally useful information should be free. By 'free' I am not referring to price, but rather to the freedom to copy the information and to adapt it to one's own uses... When information is generally useful, redistributing it makes humanity wealthier no matter who is distributing and no matter who is receiving."

Will Technology Save Newspapers?
